The City of Chelsea is a small community located in Western Washtenaw County on Interstate 94 between Jackson and Ann Arbor. Chelsea has an area of 2.4 square miles with a population of 4,435 residents. On March 9, 2004, the Village of Chelsea became a home rule city after voters approved a new city charter. Chelsea was founded in 1834. Chelsea serves a mixture of industrial, commercial, and residential uses. Major employers include the Chelsea Milling Company (maker of Jiffy Mixes), Chelsea Community Hospital, Sheridan Books, Hatch Stamping, Chelsea Retirement Communities, and Ann Arbor Machine.
